FOURTEEN

Annie

“Whoa. Easy there.” I didn’t mean to startle him into falling in the pool.

“Hi.” His gaze circles the pool, clearly checking to see if anyone else is here. “I didn’t see you there.”

I nod. “I figured that. Sorry.”

He’s standing right in front of me, all carved muscles, broad shoulders, and lean hips. Jesus. I am up close and personal with thick thighs beneath clinging wet board shorts not to mention the bulge at his crotch.

I’ve spent my whole life around athletes. Sure, they have great bodies. But this man is freakin’ Greek god perfection from head to toe.

The air around us is already steamy and now goes thicker and hotter. As our gazes lock on each other, I can feel the pull between us.

“Uh…okay if I join you?”

Oh God. Please do. Please… My lips pucker up on a smile. “It seems inappropriate.”

“I want it to be inappropriate,” he says with a low groan. He takes a couple of steps away from me and sits on the bench below the water surface, submerging that perfection up to his shoulders. My gaze lift to his face. He lifts a wet hand and shoves it into his thick dark gold hair.

Now I’m tingling in my pleasure place.

“It feels amazing.” He leans his head back, eyes closed. “I love hot tubs.”

I’ve only been here a few minutes and the water is decadently warm and soothing. “Me too. I came here for some peace and quiet.”

He opens one eye. “Are you saying you want me to be quiet?”

I pucker my lips on a smile. “Can you be quiet?”

He snorts. “Of course I can be quiet.”

The burble of the water surrounds us here at the edge of the woods. I tip my head back to peer up at the inky black sky dotted with pinpricks of brilliance and the glow of the Milky Way. You don’t see the sky like this in the city.

Still silent.

I shift so a jet is pushing at my right shoulder blade. I’m feeling the golfing from earlier. I haven’t golfed in ages. It’s not my favorite thing to do, but I wanted to be a good sport.

More silence.

Jesus. He’s really not going to say anything.

I catch one corner of his mouth lifting, as if he knows this is bugging me, as if he knows I want to talk but can’t say anything and he’s not going to be the one to break.

Competitive. Just like me.

I blow out a sigh.

“You okay?” he asks.

“Yes. Just relaxing.”

“You don’t seem relaxed.”

I roll my lips in and bite my top lip. “How am I supposed to relax when you’re…” I gesture at him and his near nakedness. “You’re stressing me.”

“I’m stressing you? I’m sitting here quiet as a one-handed clap.”

Yeah, but you’re sitting there…

“Maybe you should talk.” God, I sound like an idiot.

“We could talk quietly.” He rises halfway out of the water, looks around again, then glides over to sit beside me.

I swallow. “I think it was better with you over there.”

“Better how?” He rubs his leg against mine.
